Ed and I grew up in Huntington West Virginia, met in high school, and were married at Highlawn Presbyterian Church after college. Ed’s background is in the Methodist church but he saw the light and agreed to become a Presbyterian! (They also needed an organist!)
Both sets of parents had instilled in us the need to go to church and to get involved. My mother played piano for her Sunday School class and volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital for over thirty years. My dad served as a Deacon and an Elder, sang in the choir, and spent hours at the church after retirement working to make repairs. Both believed tithing was important and they preferred to help others without being recognized for helping.
Ed’s parents also served their church well. His mother taught Kindergarten and Sunday School while also working with various church committees and community organizations. She sang in the choir. His dad was a scout leader and also was involved with church groups. He served as church treasurer so he knew the importance of giving.
Even before we moved to Waynesboro in 2014 we attended Westminster when we were in for a visit. Our daughter and her family attended Westminster so we knew we were going to join. We were looking for a church home. Our granddaughter’s baptism (before we moved here) probably was the first time we felt as if Westminster were our home.
The definition of generosity is the spirit and action of freely and frequently giving to others. The mission-driven spirit of Westminster is what brought us here and keeps us here. We have both served on ministry teams and Ed has a particular interest in Westminster’s playground. There is also a willingness to try new methods of worship within our congregation and our leadership. There is a newness to our church from week to week, month to month, and year to year.
